VMware Fusion

I have been using Parallels for most of my Windows and Linux virtualization needs, but it's shoddy USB support has driven me over the edge. Time to cut my losses and give VMware Fusion a try.

The majority of software supporting tools (like low-level hardware debuggers) are unfortunately Windows-only or Linux-only. This means that if I want to use, for example, the CC-DEBUGGER, I need a virtualization system that does USB well.

Parallels has given me nothing but grief so I'm hoping that VMware Fusion does a better job. I'll post my findings.

Please do post the findings! I've been a loyal VMware user since I switched to it in 2007, but I haven't not looked back. In fact, I recently obtained a copy of Parallels from one of those Macheist bundles and have thought about trying it out hoping for better performance, but I never quite made the leap.

So I can't comment on Parallels 5.0, as I only have 4.0... But my recent experience with VMware Fusion has been positive enough for me to scrape up the $80 to buy a copy. It's noticeably snappier than Parallels 4.0. And, most importantly, USB devices work properly with no fuss—even after the VM has woken up from a suspended state.

For what it's worth, I recommend it.

But don't take my word for it, you can try VMware Fusion for free 30 days. I strongly encourage you to do so before putting money down.
