it's Triple-DES. Considering the source -- and that's it's a "statement against interest"(I'm sure they would rather claim it was AES) -- I'm inclined to think this is the correct answer.

@Ernest, @Janne, and others: I have nothing against a binary encoding in principal as long as it is a one-to-one transform to and from the verbose XML, and is still able to handle new namespaces. If a binary encoding is flexible enough to handle that, then I don't have a problem with it—as long as the standard is open. For example, one such binary encoding happens to be a zlib-compressed XML stream. My biggest problem with Google's action is that they are not just changing the transport, they are changing the API. They could have an XMPP compliant API and just have a bizarre transport, but this isn't the direction they are apparently going.

The GF and I have three cats. Independence, aka Ol' Man, was a stray found on July 4th, 1991(?); Ozie, aka Fatty McFat, was a returned gift; Lance, aka Scout Kitty and Spy Kitty, was a shelter rescue/adoption. All three are male. We had a female, Liberty, aka Gurl Kitty, but she couldn't handle being around three males. She wigged out completely by peeing on everything in the house and attacking everyone without provocation. Errr... Well, I guess the three boys mounting her 1000x per day can probably be classified as provocation. We gave her to a friend and she's now fine.

Anyway, a third cat isn't much different than two. Keep him!
